BRYAN APPLEGATE, ZOMBIE

Talented voice actor, Bryan Applegate, did an audition for the audiobook. When I listen to it through headphones, I get chills, especially late in the recording when we hear Ambrose speak, barely restraining his rage. This is a real treat, friends, and something I hope to fund through Kickstarter. Go sit in the dark and give this a listen! Concept_Dead_Set.mp3

Sit at the table of the dreamers, the go-getters, the star gazers, the warriors, the change makers. The conversation hits differently.

An MLJ Observation

We just watched Table 19, a ten-year-old romantic comedy about an ostracized table of losers at a wedding reception. (It's not a stellar movie, but it does feature Anna Kendrick.)

Point is: I've been there. I've felt that out of place. I got good at it, to the point I learned to "chameleon" my way in/out of most situations. (Yes, I've crashed over a dozen wedding receptions, too.)

Instead of being the odd man out, more recently I've tried to apply that quote above, both literally and figuratively. If you're reading this and know me well, are counted among my friends, it is because you are someone on that list (dreamer, star gazer, etc.) and you really give me energy. Thank you. In the words of Andrew Gold, "Thank you for being a friend."

Let's blow something up. (Figuratively, Carson, figuratively!)

On Being Overlooked

From Unbecoming Remains

Dr. Ambrose Brooks, recent zombie convert:

"Think about it, Miriam. I’ve run the gamut of social positioning, from well-educated, middle class white male to--to this--an anonymous member of a displaced people… And by my count, we’ve become the majority now. Ever seen a real Frankenstein monster, or a ghost, or even a witch? No. It all seems grossly unfair, really. A cosmic oversight. But it’s not as if we were going to picket Mattel or Spirit Halloween about it.”

MARK LANDON JARVIS TREASURE TROVE What's New? The days are getting shorter. I know, not much of a newsflash, but easy to notice if you're outside much (and difficult to accept if you dread winter like me). More importantly, you may notice that this issue of the Treasure Trove is ON THURSDAY and also A WEEK EARLY. Why, you might ask? If anyone's in the greater Wichita, KS, area, I wanted you to have a week's notice so you would join me in attending... Wichita Authors Open Mic Night When:...

MARK LANDON JARVIS TREASURE TROVE I got sidetracked. Again. This newsletter was supposed to arrive yesterday. Thursday. Treasure Trove is allegedly a Thursday newsletter, although recent evidence suggests Thursday is less a publication date and more a philosophical position. I had every intention. Then I got sidetracked. Not doing nothing, mind you. That's the aggravating part. I was working. I've been testing advertising for my books. Learning things. Watching numbers. Making notes. Changing...

MARK LANDON JARVIS Treasure Trove NEWSLETTER It's like showing up at the beach in your dress clothes, but there's no wedding here. It's shocking to encounter school bell traffic and see so many school supplies in stores. (One of my kids has a friend whose passion is collecting school supplies--hope she becomes a teacher some day.) August feels familiar. I’m the thing that’s out of place. But what a sweet place to find myself in! Creative Cross-Training I write full-time. I've written yards of...
