TREASURE TROVE

Have trouble starting something?

Count it down. No, not months ahead of time with a countdown clock--though that is motivational, too. I'm suggesting you simply give yourself a 5-4-3-2-1 countdown, then GO on zero. Do something. Anything toward the objective.

It's the easiest, cheesiest tool in my box, but it works. Why does it work? I dunno, but I think starting is the hardest part. Let me know your successes with this. Try it once today. Hit reply and tell me what you used it for.

What's New?

Showing up. I am reminded of the absolutely priceless value of simply being there. I try to practice this when friends are blue or when there's a book signing or other significant life event. I make some effort to be there (in person) for others.

I can do much better.

Just this week I attended my own retirement party and I was moved by so many fantastic people who dropped by to wish me well. Even those who simply nodded and ate some cake really mattered to me! (I have been without the right words at similar events and just do what I can to let the guest of honor know I'm there for them.)

And that's just it: be there.

What else is new? I finished two (2!) short stories this week and I have a third thing well-underway. One of these, attached below, went from nearly 4000 words to just over 400. I'm pleased with the economy of it.

I've also been coping with being appreciated. I am sharing this here because I know I am not alone. Do you also have trouble hearing nice things, accepting praise, realizing your worth? It was something I dreaded, being the center of attention for THREE HOURS, but after the fact, I am stuffed full of added value. I hope I can hold onto the realization that folks think I'm an okay guy.

On that note, support your local authors, artists, and friends. This is part of my second quarter resolutions. (I like doing this quarterly now, resolutions, for I can pick up what I was failing at and try again now not next year.) You'll see a lot more of me if you're in this area, for I'm going to double down on being there for others.

What's Next?

Honeymooning in Las Vegas. We did not get a honeymoon 25 years ago, so my wife and I are renewing vows with Elvis officiating. It also happens to be some international Elvis impersonator convention, so that promises to be an added blast.

After that, a quick tour of the Rockies with my eldest, then back to the bunker to hunker down and write. I have lots of motivation, energy, and encouragement.

Stick with me for the successes and challenges to come!

That's just the start of what doesn't quite click in my new short story, I am Maria. Her husband means well, but he's meddling in his pregnant wife's nightlife. Can you relate?

Visit an abandoned place on my website

and have your curiosity quenched.

Tie a string around this:

Zombie novel Kickstarter in July,

full-on book launch in October.

I'm building towards something!

MARK LANDON JARVIS TREASURE TROVE What's New? The days are getting shorter. I know, not much of a newsflash, but easy to notice if you're outside much (and difficult to accept if you dread winter like me). More importantly, you may notice that this issue of the Treasure Trove is ON THURSDAY and also A WEEK EARLY. Why, you might ask? If anyone's in the greater Wichita, KS, area, I wanted you to have a week's notice so you would join me in attending... Wichita Authors Open Mic Night When:...

MARK LANDON JARVIS TREASURE TROVE I got sidetracked. Again. This newsletter was supposed to arrive yesterday. Thursday. Treasure Trove is allegedly a Thursday newsletter, although recent evidence suggests Thursday is less a publication date and more a philosophical position. I had every intention. Then I got sidetracked. Not doing nothing, mind you. That's the aggravating part. I was working. I've been testing advertising for my books. Learning things. Watching numbers. Making notes. Changing...
